Smart Home; Smart Security

Smart technology enables you to create a unique environment you can look forward to coming home to. One that’s completely controlled by you, directly through your smartphone, from wherever you are!

Smart home

Turning your house into a smart home is a luxury that is becoming more affordable, giving you personal, easy-to-use control over your security, appliances, entryways, climate control, and energy efficiency. Arm or disarm your smart-security system remotely, open or close your driveway gate or garage door with the tap of a button and even save energy by controlling your lights or geyser directly from a mobile app.

Here is our list of affordable and easy to install items that can get you started on your journey to turning your house into a smart home:

  • Smart lights let you control individual lights or groups of lights from your phone and set up different "scenes" with specific brightness levels and color temperatures, so you aren't flooding your eyes with blue light at the end of the day. They can even automatically turn on and off based on a number of different triggers. As an alternative to bulbs, you can use smart switches to control the lights already built into your house.
  • Smart locks Some allow you to lock your doors from your phone, some can give a friend or family member temporary access, and unique options let you unlock your door by merely touching it with your finger. Keep an eye out in October to see Surion's latest product release.
  • TVs and remotes You may not think of your home theater as part of a smart home, but it is—especially when you connect a smart remote, which can control multiple devices at once (including lights, shades, and other smart devices) and integrate with Alexa for easy, hands-free control.
  • Smart plugs If rather than buy all new smart products, you'd rather make your existing electronics voice- and app-activated, there's the option of smart plugsSmart-ify anything that plugs into the wall, think chargers, a dishwasher, or even a slow cooker. Plug anything into it and suddenly you're in control.

Further, than the comfort of convenience, smart solutions offer a sense of real reassurance. Receive security camera footage automatically recorded by CCTV cameras when one of your security devices is triggered or check in with the kids through two-way communication cameras.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has made it easier than ever to set up a smart home in which you can remotely control your door locks, lights, thermostats, and more, using your smartphone and an app. It has also made it easy and affordable to monitor your home from pretty much anywhere in the world. Smart security systems are highly customizable and available as DIY kits or as full-blown setups that require professional input and installation.

Depending on your needs, you can go with a security system that you monitor yourself; or pay a subscription fee to have your home monitored by professionals 24/7. You can even take advantage of on-demand monitoring services for when you are away on vacation.

They say no news is good news, but there is nothing worse than not knowing. We are living in an age of instant gratification, and how great will it be that you can pick up your phone, launch an app that is connected to your CCTV cameras at home, and allow you to see for yourself who’s at the gate, what the kids are up to, or why the alarm triggered?

Introducing smart home security. A smart home security system connects to your Wi-Fi network and allows you to monitor and control your CCTV cameras and other security devices using your smartphone and an appropriate app.

Entry-level smart-security systems usually include door and window sensors, a motion detector, and a hub that communicates with these devices using one or more wireless protocols such as Wi-Fi, Z-Wave, Zigbee, or a proprietary mesh network. Extra door, motion, and window sensors can be easily added to provide coverage for your entire house; thus allowing you to build a comprehensive system that gives you the ability to monitor and actuate door locks, garage door openers, indoor and outdoor CCTV cameras, bright lights, loud sirens, water sensors and more.

Any smart security system worth its salt offers products that work together in a seamless environment and can be controlled using customized rules. For example, you can create rules to have the lights turn on when motion is detected, have your doors unlock when a smoke alarm goes off, and have a surveillance camera begin recording when a sensor is triggered. Some systems store the CCTV footage locally on an SD card or a solid-state drive, while others offer cloud storage. Locally stored surveillance video recordings are a good choice when on a DIY-budget, but you must be careful not to overwrite important footage that you may need at a later stage. Cloud-storage makes it easy to store and access recorded CCTV footage, however, it can cost thousands of rands per year depending on your subscription package. Some systems offer both cloud storage and local storage, and some provide a dedicated storage drive that gives you DVR/NVR capabilities with time-lapse recording, which makes it easy to find a video event that took place at a specific point in time.

It is clear that more-effective and smart-security systems are required to actually keep South Africans safe. One that stops criminals before they do any damage. Surion’s Sense system is different. It does not rely on the reactive; alarms to go off or humans to be on the constant lookout for criminal activity. Surion prefers to be pro-active. We use smart artificial intelligence technology that is the first of its kind in South Africa bringing intelligence to your surveillance system. We use state-of-the-art computer vision, artificial intelligence (AI), IoT and IP cameras have enabled us to create a seamless security eco-system for businesses and homes.
